Aggressive Recon (Battlefield 3) v0.1

Parry
Opening notes:
This is something for people who like to play battlefield, but have a hard time playing Recon class due to habits. This does not mean this "guide" is the definitive answer for Aggressive Recon.

Recon is a highly underrated class due to its insane skillcap and most people playing it in the middle of nowhere with a 12x scope. This post will hopefully help you be a better Recon, and an even better ally for your team.

Pros:
Awesome oneshot-kill potential, a single bullet can and usually will put a target down.
Motion Sensor
Spawn Beacon, instant party, and a free spawnpoint.

Cons:
Stuck to Personal Defense Weapons and shotguns if we want something other than semi-auto rifles or bolt action rifles.
if you miss with a bolt, chances are you're dead.
Suppression screws over Bolt Action accuracy.
We're a more support oriented role than Support class.

Weapon loadout options:

This is where it gets tricky, since everyone has their likes and dislikes. However, I'll give you my preferred loadout (when I'm not grinding weapon service stars for the 500 kill dogtags):

M98B with EO-Tech Holographic Sight (or ACOG 4x), Laser Sight and Straight Pull Bolt with M1911 backup, Sprint Specialization with T-UGS.

With this setup, you're a force to be reckoned with, 95 damage with a 1.06 chest modifier. This is an instant kill up to 15 meters. On Hardcore, this is a kill no matter what distance. If the target somehow magically lives at pointblank, as soon as the bullet is fired, switch to the M1911 which is 34 damage at pointblank and put a bullet in him (this is an almost guaranteed kill if they somehow live the first shot at pointblank). The problem with this setup is you get 5+1 rounds to fire (from a full magazine), and a rather slow bolt pull (but god damn that sound is beautiful).

On the off chance they do get away after being hit, any friendly blue dots he runs into will probably mop him up, giving you a nice kill assist in the process.

Our T-UGS is perfect for area surveillance and area lockdown, Any enemy that's running (or walking around while standing) will be shown on the minimap every half a second so long as they're within range. This range is larger than the MAV's at the cost of sometimes being a pain in the ass to plant. Either way, this is an invaluable tool for either holding an area, or capping one. Sadly, only one T-UGS can be planted at any given time by the same person.

The Spawnbeacon on the other hand allows you and your squad to spawn on it wherever it's placed. Placed in a sneaky spot, this tool is perfect for rapidly reinforcing areas that are about to be capped by the enemy, or to make their day a living hell. Be warned, if you die and you respawn on the Beacon, you'll have to re-plant it. There's also the fact that when you place it, your squad can't directly spawn on you until you either pick it back up, or it gets destroyed.

Will add more soon.

In-depth explanation per rifle:

SV-98 Snaiperskaya Vintovka (Model 1998): Babby's first rifle

This is the first bolt action rifle you unlock, with a starting damage of 80 (1.25 chest marker, instant kill within 20m), and a ranged minimum of 50 at 80 meters. What's unique about the SV-98 is its ability in hipfire ability. Having the highest hipfire accuracy base, and a rather fast bolt pull (faster than all rifles except the M40A5), the SV-98 is a great starting choice for aggressive recon. Starting ammo (without ammo perk) is 10+1 with 33 in reserve. 48 rounds per minute.

M40A5: Bolt Action Hero

Compared to the SV-98, there's five key differences with the M40: Muzzle velocity is slower than the SV-98, faster bolt pull, a 15 meter instant kill to the chest (compared to the SV-98's 20 meters), a 59 minimum damage at 100 meters, and a slightly faster empty reload. With a lower hipfire accuracy (albeit slight) and a lower muzzle velocity, the M40 is a much more specialized weapon for close range engagements. Like the SV-98, 10+1 with 33 in reserve, and 80~59. 54.5 rounds per minute.

M98B: Last Bolt Action unlocked

Now, this is the big daddy of the sniper rifles. A massive 95 damage at point blank (1.06 chest modifier, a noticeably lower number than the others, still allows it to kill in one shot at 15 meters), with 59 damage at range. Key features are its slow bolt pull, small magazine and lower hipfire accuracy. the M98B's advantage lies in it having the highest bullet velocity in the game out of any of the sniper rifles. Ammo is 5+1 with 36 in reserve. 46.2 rounds per minute.

L96: Leave this soldier behind

Statistically, and realistically the worst Bolt Action in the game, with a damage model that's exactly the same as the M40A5 (80 to 15 meters, 59 at 100 meters), a worse dry reload than the M98B, and only a slightly better tactical reload than the M40. The most notable feature about the L96; its absolutely horrible hipfire accuracy. With a laser sight. 10+1 rounds with 33 in reserve. 43.5 rounds per minute.

JNG-90: The Jingo Jango

This weapon, at first, holds alot of similarities with the M98B, primarily bolt pull speed (46.2 rounds a minute) and its reload times. Though the damage model is the exact same as the M40, the Jingo Jango's unique in that despite using US iron sights, it gets its Russian accessories first. Like most bolt actions, the Jingo Jango has 10+1, with 66 in reserve, much higher than any other rifle in the game. 46.2 rounds per minute.

Basics of usage:

A weapon is only as accurate as the person that uses it. It's only as useful as the person behind it.

Primarily, you'll want to aim for center mass and headshots, center mass being the preferred method of killing. A basic situation is this:

You fire your bolt action, as soon as you fire, switch to your pistol and finish them off. This, of course, implies we didn't kill in the first shot.

Vehicles that can be penetrated (through the windshield/cockpit) by sniper rifles:

Transport copters, Attack Choppers, jets, buggies, Skid Loaders, rape trucks (Barsuk and Phoenix), and Scout Choppers.

Just because we can potentially kill the pilot/copilot, doesn't mean we will. This can and will take either a lucky shot, or ALOT of practice.

Time for a small update;

Do's:
Remember, spotting is your FRIEND.

If you're not spotting, you're not helping nearly as much as you can.

If you find yourself missing alot, keep practicing. I can't stress this enough.

Be smart, use your T-UGS, use your beacon. These tools are invaluable.

flank your enemies when you can. Your enemies may start raging hard if they get flanked repeatedly by the same person who wipes their team.

Don't's:

Sit on a hill doing absolutely nothing for your team except contributing to a loss

Plant your beacon in high traffic areas, great way to get everyone in your squad killed, knifed and distrust you.

Be stupid. Since we're using bolt actions, we [need] to play as smart as possible to be effective.

I think the game is pretty fun. With many of my friends on Xbox playing the destiny beta instead of Armored Core, I've started to get into Warframe. It's borderline addictive; I've always wanted to be a space ninja...
