Can somebody explain this joke for me?

Croodle
Cause I feel like I'm missing some sort of darker implication, other than the fact that his wife died.

"John and Sam, both in their sixties, were fishing on a boat.

A funeral procession passed on the bridge above.

John stopped fishing and stood up.

He removed his hat and held it to his chest as he watched the procession pass.

Sam was astonished by the sight.

He said, John I've known you a long time but I didn't know you were so respectful!

John responded as he put his bait on his rod,....

Well,...I was married to her for forty years!"
I prefer to drown myself in self-deprecation.

Well, he's fishing instead of being a part of the procession.  Kinda negates the "respectful" part.  Not that good of a joke in my opinion.

Sam is also not a good friend to not know John's wife if he knew him for a long time
