This post was updated on .
Edit: Head over to this forum: Front Page Design Content
So, in response to another thread, I threw out a couple of rough ideas - they didn't come to me on the spot, they've been percolating around my head for a while now and, in fact, I've attempted (lukewarmly) to get them going in the past. This my original post: So, basically the process for getting stuff onto the front page would be very simple. There'd be a dedicated thread (stickied!) for asking people to suggest topics to go onto the front page. These would be things that the individual is curious about or wants to learn about. Then, these topics would be produced either by an individual who sticks his hand up for the job - anybody is allowed! - or it would take the form of a group discussion in a freeform thread, and this discussion would be synthesised into a full-fledged post and put on the front page. We also should have somewhere to discuss the stuff on the front page already.

I agree, I think this is one of the key things our forums lack, is content from the posters. I can see a lot more to gain from this then just community content on the front page, I can see a broader spectrum discussion, event making and other things to come about this.
I would also appreciate a more strict policy about front page items, instead of posting willy nilly any old thing that seems like news. |

Are you willing to sticky some of these topics? I'd think that a suggestion/submission thread at least is required. That thread would handle people suggesting topics to be covered or submitting their own articles for the blog. Then, we'd have another thread for whatever happens to be the current discussion. Do you think that second topic should be stickied? And which forum do you want it in?

Hmm, you know, as much as Godly hates sub-folders, I think we already may be getting a bit sticky-heavy. Look at it this way, while this sticky would likely be active, most stickies aren't. As far as keeping site activity and appearance up, more stickies means more topics people have to scroll through to find what they are looking for. Plus, once people have read a sticky, they usually don't come back to it. I think in this case, since it would be something used on a regular basis, and would have multiple threads pertaining to it, it would be better as a sub-category. I think it would be better if it were in a style like the forum games though, not like the admin zone, where you have to go into it to see the contents. Then, you could sticky the main thread, and the most recent should float near the top since it is the most recent.
However, before we do either way, sticky or sub, we should get Ray(Godly)'s opinion. But, I'd like to hear what you guys think. Edit: Also, this may or may not be a good idea, but if we made it a sub-folder, we could give you (noklu) more permissions within said folder (sticky, lock, delete, ect.). I'm not sure about this, but it would allow you to manage it without having to wait for one of us. ~Josh Hollinrake, Dj7291993 Send Me a Message - Admin Message Box Check out my Portfolio "Dreamers Dream, Doers Do, Achievers Achieve, But Champions Do It ALL." ~The Goads "A man cannot directly choose his circumstances, but he can choose his thoughts, and so indirectly, yet surely, shape his circumstances." ~James Allen |

to be honest, I was kinda hoping for something along those lines! And, we could make it so that the threads didn't bump each other out of the way. That way prior discussions remain on page and don't interfere with existing ones. (we'd still need a sticky for the main threads at the top of the sub-folder)

Also, as to where, since it pertains to the site (and since activity is fairly low here), I think it would go best in site affairs. As for the bumping each other out of the way, I'm not sure that's practical. I think I know what you're saying, but for clarification's sake, would you mind elaborating?

Well, it'd be a sub-category, right? Then, effectively, we'd have a system where the thread at the top is not the one with the latest post but rather the thread that has been created most recently. This ensures that discussion on the most recent proposed topic remains at the top of the board. It also means that other posts that have been finalised and posted onto the blog can remain in the board for any further crtiques or suggestions about that particular topic - whether they be grammatical or theoretical.
In addition to this, we'd have a thread at the very top dedicated to receiving suggestions and submissions.

Ahh, so you want them sorted by creation date, not most recent reply. Let me see if there is a way to do that. If I can't find one, Cobb may be able to make one with the site changes, but I'm not sure about that.
Edit: So far, I don't see anything. In fact, I don't see any sorting options, outside from sorting sub-apps from topics. There may still be ways, but they wouldn't be automatic. For example, you can choose the order of stickies, but I'm not sure we want to go there. There are a lot less admin-like options here regarding structure than you would think. Cobb does it all through coding, but I don't think he could set the code for just one sub-category. It may be something we could do with the update though, so keep your fingers crossed.

What about a set up like the announcement archive? I thought that folder was sorted by creation date?
Lemme just post in one and test. Edit: Yeah, they don't get bumped.

Hmm, I'll have to check and see if it is the structure, or because they are announcements, although I'm guessing the earlier. Time for testing. ;)
Edit: Well, it is possible if I set the application format to "news". However, that would make it look just like the archives, which, while fine for archives, doesn't feel quite right for active discussions.

Well, once we get the ok, and figure out how to do it, let me know. I'd be glad to set it all up for you. This has got me thinking for something else too....

Yeah, I'm (obviously) not going to be able to work out how to get it done - no admin privileges :( - so whenever you think you have a way to get it done, post in here and I'll set up the threads and what not. From there, it's just a matter of making sure everybody gets involved and keeping it organised!

Ok, well, I can't do it today (work), but I'll try on Monday. We'll get it set up, then we can tweak it. Permissions: who should be able to start a topic? Do want it open to everyone, or only members can start one, and everyone can reply?

Thread creation permissions should be limited, the reason being that we have to ensure discussion is concentrated, much lint the reason for having only a few sub-forums instead of many. Seeing as the discussions will have to be summarised into to go on the blog, I'd like to have control over it and effectively act as a chaperone to the discussions. Now, anybody can suggest a topic, of course, but only in the designated thread. This ensures that people are concentrated into as few discussions as possible, allowing a much richer compilation of RP's collective knowledge. Also, posting privileges in the threads should be limited to those who have registered an account on the site. Maybe activity in this sub forum can act as another measure of general activity - that would provide an additional incentive to post in it: the possibility of getting/maintaining a portfolio.

When you guys get this started up I'll just start tossing in random level/game design articles, posts, and what not that I have found throughout the years to let you guys discuss and turn it into a front page article.

Ok, so for now, I'll just give you (and the admins, of course) permission to start topics. Spam is the only folder where you can be non-registered to post, but I'll double check it. For now, I'll put it in Site Affairs, since it deals with the site. We can move it later if we need to. For now, just let me know if you need something stickied, locked, ect., and I'll do it as soon as I can. If I can figure out a way to make it let you do it, I'll let you know. I'll give you permission to change the name and description of it, but if it doesn't work, just tell me what you want it called, and I'll change it. For now, I'll call it "Topics for the Front Page".
